Reflections at Eppalock
A nature-based sanctuary providing respite and support for people living with dementia and their carers through connection to country, culture, and community.
Our latest flagship project is "Reflections at Eppalock," a nature-based sanctuary nestled on 20 acres on the serene banks of Lake Eppalock. This haven offers an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to recharge, connect with others in similar situations, and learn new coping strategies together. Specialised accommodation is also available for those wishing to take a short break.
Reflections at Eppalock also provides the ideal safe and secure environment for care groups and service providers to bring clients for a relaxed outing or to undertake group activities. This unique project blends natural beauty with innovative care, setting a benchmark for inclusive, community-driven dementia support.

Reflections at Eppalock is a pioneering initiative designed to redefine dementia care through innovative respite, specialised accommodation, dedicated spaces for meaningful connection and inclusivity. With a focus on meeting diverse needs, this project is set to become a beacon of excellence in inclusive dementia care, enhancing the well-being of individuals and families.
Innovative Respite
Our innovative respite activities will include therapeutic programs tailored to enhance cognitive and emotional health, such as guided nature walks, sensory gardens, and creative workshops. These activities are designed to stimulate the senses, foster social connections, and provide a calming respite for both individuals with dementia and their carers.
Accommodation
Costerfield House, our SmartCare Villa prototype will be the first of several accommodation offerings. It has been designed to provide respite and support for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. It offers a safe and comforting environment, combining cutting-edge AI safety monitoring technology with a soothing creative design
Dedicated Spaces
By offering a dedicated space for respite care within a natural setting, the project addresses the growing need for dementia support services in the region. Reflections at Eppalock further aligns with local efforts to utilise and preserve natural spaces for community benefit, providing a serene and restorative environment that complements the health and wellbeing objectives of local plans.
Inclusivity
The project’s design and implementation are guided by principles of inclusivity, cultural safety, and respect for diversity, ensuring that all community members, regardless of their background, can benefit from the respite services offered.

By collaborating with community groups like BDAC, CALD groups and LGBTQI+ organisations, the retreat also promotes inclusivity and fosters a sense of belonging, making it a vital resource for the broader community. This initiative not only improves the quality of life for those living with dementia but also provides essential support to carers, who play a critical role in the ongoing care and wellbeing of the person they care for.
First Nations Communities: For First Nations people, the retreat will be a culturally safe space that acknowledges and respects their connection to land and community. Collaborating with the Bendigo District Aboriginal Co-operative (BDAC), the project will incorporate culturally appropriate practices and activities that align with the values and traditions of local Aboriginal communities. This could include opportunities for cultural expression, storytelling, and connection to Country, which are vital for the mental and spiritual wellbeing of First Nations people. By involving First Nations communities in the planning and delivery of services, the project ensures that their voices are heard and their needs are met in a way that is respectful and empowering.
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities: The retreat will also be an inclusive space for CALD communities, who often face barriers to accessing mainstream services due to language differences, cultural misunderstandings, or a lack of culturally appropriate care. The project will address these challenges by providing multilingual support, culturally sensitive activities, and outreach programs designed to engage CALD communities. By fostering an environment where cultural diversity is celebrated and respected, the retreat will help reduce feelings of isolation and enhance the wellbeing of CALD individuals and their carers. The project will also work closely with local CALD organizations to ensure that the services provided are relevant and accessible to these communities.
LGBTQI+ Communities: LGBTQI+ individuals, particularly older adults, often face discrimination and social isolation, making access to safe and supportive services crucial. The retreat will collaborate with Thorne Harbour Country, an organization dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of LGBTQI+ communities, to create an environment where LGBTQI+ individuals feel welcome and affirmed. This partnership will ensure that the retreat offers programs and services that are sensitive to the unique experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQI+ people, including the provision of LGBTQI+ inclusive care training for staff and volunteers. By creating a space where everyone can be their authentic selves, the retreat will help reduce the stigma and isolation often experienced by LGBTQI+ individuals and provide them with the support they need.
